Water sculpture at the ING Bank, Holland

The dynamic ING bank headquarters in Amsterdam, used by over 2000 office workers, won a prestigious international award as ‘best ecologically designed’ building in the world for 1988. It features several different Flowform sculptures designed by John Wilkes (UK) and his team of sculptors.

Iain Trousdell, the Design for Life Flowform designer, was a member of the original group of three who designed the complete Olympia Flowform series in 1977 under John Wilkes' direction. A portion of these were used in the gaudi garden, and the complete set was used in another part of the ING gardens.

As Elaine Louie of the New York Times wrote on February 1st, 1990 - "The most poetic and ecologically sound innovations in the bank’s design are the Flowforms."

Gaudi Garden

This water sculpture follows a design theme reminiscent of Antonio Gaudi, the modernist Spanish architect, and provides a relaxing pond and mountain stream experience for the bank’s employees.

Tidalform Sculpture

This two metre wide sculpture features a tidal pond experience as water runs from the oscillating smaller portion into the expansive wing-shaped pond with a rhythmical flow and ebb. This occurs because of the shape of the sculpture only, and in fact, the whole sculpture arose from the hydrological studies of fish heart embryology!

Handrail

Shown here is an interior handrail which channels and treats rainwater through a public stairway down to the main foyer of the building.

Water is pumped into a pool in the hand rail at the top of the stairs...

..which then flows through the sculpture the full length of the hand rail...

...and finally sweeps down a rhythmic looking cascade into one of the foyers.
